Dr. Christine Lalonde

About

Biography

Dr. Lalonde was a first-generation student from rural Newfoundland, where she was a town mayor prior to moving to Northern Ontario in 2010.  Since 2023, she was the Director of Health Services for Nipissing First Nation, where she directed the planning, implementation, and evaluation of 20 health care programs and services.   Dr. Lalonde is actively involved in community and academic service ranging from Speaker of Senate to a volunteer firefighter.

  • Indigenous Mental Health: Investigating mental health needs of Indigenous children and youth, developing culturally relevant interventions, and fostering community partnerships.
  • Fetal Programming and Epigenetics: Examining the effects of prenatal exposure to stressors (e.g., residential school trauma, discrimination, toxins) on mental health, with a focus on epigenetic effects and transgenerational trauma.
  • Radiation Research: Exploring the biological impacts of low-dose and natural background radiation, including effects on behavior, neural development, and genetics.
  • Community-Based Participatory Research (CBPR): Engaging Indigenous communities as active partners in all stages of the research process.
  • Toxicology: Investigating toxicology and stress responses in fetal neural development.
