About

Biography

Inês Tavares holds a Bachelor's degree in Law and a Master's in Public Law from the State University of Rio de Janeiro (Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro – UERJ). After passing the Bar exam, she worked in law enforcement, primarily at the Federal Prosecutor's Office in Rio de Janeiro, focusing on white-collar crime. In 2019, she began a joint PhD in Criminology at the University of Ottawa and in Law at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro.

Research Interests / Areas

Current Interests: Cancel culture. Online public shaming. Surveillance. Pre-modern forms of punishment. Guilty Pleas. Summary offences.

Current and Future Research: Ines Tavares is completing a dissertation on processes of online public shaming. In addition to her doctoral work, she is currently investigating the processing of guilty pleas in summary offence cases in Ontario.
